Document Management
Creating Documents
New Document from the Documents Screen
- Open the HandWrite Pro app
- Tap the floating action button (the "+" button) at the bottom right corner of the screen
- You can create a new document, import a pdf or svg file, or create new folders here
- A new document will be created with a default name "Unnamed"
- The document will automatically open in drawing mode
New Document from Within a Folder
- Navigate to a folder by tapping on it in the folder list
- Tap the floating action button (the "+" button)
- The new document will be automatically assigned to the currently selected folder
Organizing Documents in Folders
Folders help you organize your documents into logical groups, such as "Work", "Personal", "Ideas", or any category that makes sense for your workflow.
Selecting a Folder
- In the Documents screen, look at the top of the screen where the folder name is displayed
- If no folder is selected, you'll see "Documents" or "
" - Tap on a folder in the left drawer to select it as your current view
Moving Documents Between Folders
- In the Documents screen, long-press on a document to enter selection mode
- Select multiple documents by tapping on them (optional)
- Tap the menu icon (three dots) or the "More" option
- Choose Move to Folder from the context menu
- Select the destination folder from the list
- The selected documents will be moved to the chosen folder
Moving Documents Out of a Folder
- Follow the same steps as moving between folders
- When prompted to select a folder, choose "
" - The document(s) will be removed from any folder and appear in your main documents list
Tagging Documents
Tags are keywords or labels that you can attach to documents for easy filtering and organization. Unlike folders, a document can have multiple tags.
Adding Tags to a Document
- Open the document you want to tag
- In the left drawer panel, find the "Tags" section
- Type your tag in the text field (minimum 2 characters)
- Tap the "+" button or press Enter
- The tag will appear with a colored background and can be removed by tapping the "x" on it
Using Existing Tags
- When adding a new tag, if that tag already exists for other documents, it will appear in the list below
- Tap on an existing tag to add it to the current document
- The tag will be added with its assigned color
Filtering Documents by Tag
- In the Documents screen, look at the filter section at the top
- Tap on any tag that appears in the filter bar
- Only documents with that tag will be displayed
- To remove the filter, tap the "Reset Filter" button or select a different folder
Removing Tags from a Document
- Open the document
- In the Tags section of the left drawer
- Tap the "x" icon on any tag you want to remove
- The tag will be removed from that document (but not deleted from your system if used by other documents)
Managing Folders
Creating a New Folder
- In the Documents screen, tap the folder icon button in the floating action menu
- A dialog will appear asking for the folder name
- Enter a descriptive name for your folder
- Tap "Create"
- The new folder will be added to your folder list and automatically selected
Renaming a Folder
- Long-press on a folder in the folder list to select it
- A context menu will appear with options including "Rename"
- Tap "Rename"
- Enter the new name for the folder
- Tap "OK" or the checkmark
Deleting a Folder
- Long-press on a folder in the folder list to select it
- A context menu will appear with options including "Delete"
- Tap "Delete"
- A dialog will ask whether to:
- Delete folder and contents: Permanently removes the folder and all documents inside it
- Delete folder only (keep contents): Removes the folder but moves all documents to the main documents list
Selecting a Folder as Default for New Documents
- Tap on any folder in the folder list to select it
- When you create a new document using the floating action button, it will automatically be placed in this selected folder
- To clear the selection and return to no default folder, tap the "x" button next to the folder name
Drawing Tools
Accessing Drawing Tools
- Open any document to enter drawing mode
- The left drawer panel contains all your drawing tools
- Swipe from the left edge of the screen or tap the menu icon to open the drawer
Pen Settings
- Color: Tap the color palette button to choose from preset colors or create custom colors using the color mixer
- Line Width: Use the slider to adjust pen thickness from fine to bold
- Opacity: Adjust how transparent or solid your strokes appear
- Smooth: Toggle smooth drawing for more fluid lines
Page Management
- Add Page: Insert a new page at the end of your document
- Delete Page: Remove the current page (use with caution)
- Page Size: Choose from standard sizes like A4, Letter, etc.
- Orientation: Switch between portrait and landscape mode
- Page Ruling: Select line patterns including blank, lined, grid, and graph paper
Importing Backgrounds
- Tap the "Import" button in the drawer
- Choose from:
- PDF Import: Import a PDF file as your document background
- SVG Import: Import vector graphics for precise illustrations
Cloud Sync with Google Drive
HandWrite Pro integrates with Google Drive to backup and sync your documents across devices.
Enabling Cloud Sync
- Ensure you're signed in to Google Drive within the app
- Go to Settings if needed to configure cloud options
- Your documents will automatically sync when saved
Manual Sync
- In the Documents screen, tap the cloud sync icon (usually a cloud with an arrow)
- The app will check for newer versions on Google Drive
- Any updates from other devices will be downloaded
- Your local changes will be uploaded to the cloud
Benefits of Cloud Sync
- Access your documents from multiple Android devices
- Automatic backup protects against data loss
- Documents remain available even if your device is lost or damaged
Import and Export
Importing Documents
From HWSM Files (HandWrite Pro / Scribmaster Format)
- Tap the Import button in the drawer
- Select "Import" for .hwsm files
- Choose a file from your device storage
- The document will be imported with all its drawing data intact
From PDF Files
- Tap the Import button in the drawer
- Select "PDF Import"
- Choose a PDF file
- Each page of the PDF becomes a background layer in your document
From SVG Files
- Tap the Import button in the drawer
- Select "SVG Import"
- Choose an SVG vector graphics file
- The graphics will be added to your document as a new layer
Exporting Documents
Export as HWSM (Native Format)
- Preserves all drawing data, layers, and settings
- Use this for backup or further editing
Export as PDF
- Tap the Export button in the drawer
- Select "PDF Export"
- Choose resolution and whether to include ruling lines
- The PDF can be opened on any device with a PDF reader
Export as Image (PNG/JPG)
- Tap the Export button in the drawer
- Select "PNG/JPG Export"
- Choose resolution and file name
- Export to gallery or share directly to other apps
Export as SVG
- Exports your drawing as vector graphics
- Useful for further editing in vector design software
Export to Evernote
- Tap the Export button in the drawer
- Select "Evernote"
- The document will be sent to Evernote as a note with an image attachment

Organizing Your Workflow
- Create folders for different projects or categories
- Use tags to mark documents by status (e.g., "draft", "review", "final")
- Combine folder and tag filtering for precise document searches
- Regularly sync with Google Drive to protect your work
Best Practices
- Create meaningful folder names that reflect your organizational system
- Use consistent tag naming conventions across all documents
